John 8: 9-11a

…those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

“No one, sir,” she said…

When I read this passage recently, I focused in on the phrase “the older ones first.” I have just started facilitating a Bible study/prayer group of 20-something single ladies, and I feel suddenly¬†“older”! This passage of scripture reminded me that, of all the things advancing age brings with it, perhaps humility is one of the more important ones. Who am I to judge or condemn? I need to assess wisely and make God-glorifying decisions. But I am still just clay in the hands of my Maker. If I feel led to state a conviction, so be it. I ought to do it, however, without condemning.
